Tomatoes may harbour Alzheimer's cure |

 Besides making pasta's curry tangy, the plump and red tomato has far more serious benefits - the humble fruit can be a suitable carrier for an oral vaccine against Alzheimer's disease, says a group of researchers.
The study, conducted by HyunSoon Kim from the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) in Korea and colleagues from Digital Biotech Inc. and the Department of Biological Science at Wonkwang University, is currently in the early stages. |

 Indonesia sebagai bangsa agraris ternyata sudah masuk dalam ”perangkap pangan” atau food trap negara maju dan kapitalisme global. Tujuh komoditas pangan utama nonberas yang dikonsumsi masyarakat sangat bergantung pada impor. Bahkan, empat dari tujuh komoditas pangan utama nonberas, yakni, gandum, kedelai, daging ayam ras, dan telur ayam ras, sudah masuk kategori kritis. Meskipun belum kritis, jagung, daging sapi, dan susu patut diwaspadai.

 Pemerintah Indonesia memberi kesempatan untuk melakukan pengujian terbatas atau confined field trial tanaman pangan trasgenik, bukan pengembangan secara massal. Namun, pengujian harus mengikuti Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 21 Tahun 2005 tentang Pengkajian Keamanan Hayati Produk Rekayasa Genetika. Demikian diutarakan Menteri Pertanian Anton Apriyantono melalui Kepala Badan Litbang Departemen Pertanian Gatot Iriyanto, saat membuka ”Seminar Internasional Prospek dan Peran Bioteknologi Agrikultur untuk Kesejahteraan Masyarakat” di Medan. |

Green light for plan to boost genetically modified crops |

 A plan aimed at cultivating high-yield and pest-resistant genetically modified (GM) crops for the country to achieve agricultural sustainability has been approved, the authorities have said.The State Council announced on its website on Wednesday the approval of the plan, one of 16 key State plans marked by the central government to achieve breakthroughs in their respective fields between 2006 and 2020.

 The next comparison was between the same generations of wild type (WT06) and transgenic (T06) seeds from plants that were grown side by side, but separated, in an environmentally controlled chamber. These conditions would eliminate the environmental effects. In this case, 43 proteins were up- or down-regulated, far fewer than those induced by the environment. |
